The Cobb County Police Department continues to fall shorter and farther back while everything around us excels. Over the past few years it has been become clear that those outside uniform fall into second or last place among everything else within the department. Detectives have been told for years that there was no pursuit to get any incentive back like 5%. As a result there is less and less interest in detectives, this was something cause by the chain of command. There has never been a time where investigations have been a priority of any kind. The detective units are stretched thin to include Criminal Investigations at the Precinct as well as the Special Victims units. They scream for manpower but are met with none. Detectives take up investigations from where the uniform officers cannot and maintain a continuous case load. They are always behind the curve and upper chain of command we are told to prioritize certain cases and be flexed out due to over time concerns. The cases pile up and the workload increases but they will not allow them to work the cases. This comes even when a detective wants to work over to maintain a somewhat healthy workload and is met with no from supervision.
Secondly, the chain has become a book of secrets. There was once a time when emails were sent out to show movement and promotions but that has since stopped. So if an officer on the road or a detective in an office does not see a person come or leave there is no indicator for movement. That leaves those to think there is no movement. For some reason it has become a super-secret set of movements and decision making. This type of practices has led to a drop in confidence in the upper chain of command.
Thirdly, the department has continued to fall further and further behind to keep up with the technological advancements of crime. There are departments close to us that have stepped up to combat the new types of crimes. Instead we stand stagnant and think only the habits of hold will hold true today which is far from the truth. Eventually we will become embarrassed because we will need to seek help from an outside agency to combat something.
Our chain and leaders need to step up. Rather than being on cruise control and counting down your time to retirement and leaving the department, step up when we need it most. Really, at this point what do you have to loose, a few years or months and speaking your mind to secure the future of the department is only the right thing to do at this point.
GSP will get a 20% pay raise. How long until we start losing people to them and will this make recruiting officers much harder? Cobb needs to do the right thing with the pay recommendation!
